Big Blue Swim School in Naperville is more than just a place for swim lessons — it’s a community-driven, progress-focused environment where kids gain essential life skills in the water. Owned and operated by Rachael Roth, the school is committed to making swimming a fun, safe and empowering experience for all.
Big Blue Swim School was founded in 2009 by competitive swimmers Chris DeJong and John Lonergan. DeJong missed an opportunity to make the U.S. Olympic team when he lost to legendary Olympic medalist Michael Phelps by just four-tenths of a second. His disappointment over the loss fueled him to use his experience to teach swimmers at all levels. The Naperville location opened in 2022.
At Big Blue, swimming is about more than strokes and kicks; it’s about confidence. Its highly trained adult instructors get in the water alongside students, and lessons are tailored to fit each child’s individual needs. Whether a swimmer is just getting started or working on mastering advanced techniques, there’s a place for them in the pool.
The school offers year-round, weekly lessons that families can start or stop at any time, providing ultimate flexibility. The 90-degree pool ensures a comfortable learning experience, while Big Blue’s proprietary technology lets parents track a swimmer’s progress in real time.
Big Blue Swim School also offers adaptive swimming lessons designed to cater to children with mild to severe sensory issues, problems with motor skills, difficulty processing information, attention issues and other conditions that may physically or psychologically impede their ability to learn how to swim.
Beyond the pool, Big Blue Swim School is an active member of the Naperville community, participating in school events, business partnerships, and sponsorships. Roth believes in giving back, whether through donation baskets or event tables, strengthening ties with local families.
